Tokyo is synonymous with concrete jungles and skyscrapers. But it’s pretty well-known that the megalopolis has plenty of greens spread throughout the city. However, the only valley in Japan lies in the Setagaya ward, a ravine none other than the Todoroki Keikoku (Todoroki Ravine/Valley). It’s a speck of jungle in the midst of the most populous metropolis in the world, a breath of fresh air that’s more than surprising to find amidst the sea of buildings and people.

A complete break from the bustling Tokyo

The Todoroki Keikoku is a piece of tranquil heaven that lets you have a taste of Tokyo before modern times. The valley is approximately 1 kilometer long and it can be easily accessed from many major wards of Tokyo. It’s definitely worth a visit, whether you’re in Tokyo for a week or living there for a year. This special little spot makes you forget that you’re actually in the middle of one of the largest metropolis in the world.

The Todoroki Keikoku is never too crowded

Dabbed as one of the most unconventional green spaces in Tokyo, the Todoroki Valley is thankfully without a crowd. Expect both locals and travelers alike walking along the paved path during the morning and afternoon.

A gorgeous place for morning and afternoon walks

The walk through the valley takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes, which is quite a sufficient amount of time to get your fix of exercise. The surrounding trees and its small river makes you feel as if you’re away in the midst of a traditional Japanese village, instead of in the highly convenient mega-city of Tokyo. Take the train to go to the Todoroki station first thing in your one-day itinerary. Even if you arrive when the sun is high up, it’s still going to be an extremely pleasant walk.

The extremely pleasant temperature during the summer

You’ll immediately notice a temperature drop once you step into the Todoroki Ravine area. It’s overall a very comfy place to simply chill and bask in the view and nature. Due to the drop in temperature in the area, this spot is popular with the locals for walks during the summer months, especially with the locals.

Interesting spots to discover as you go through the Todoroki Valley

There are several places of interest that you may want to check out during your walk in the valley. You can find temples, bridges, as well as waterfalls, among others. The Todoroki Fudo temple originated centuries ago during the Heian period, running from 790s to 1185, also known as the golden period in Japanese history.

Access to Todoroki Ravine Park

The Todoroki Valley is only 10 minutes walk from the Todoroki Station. You can access this gorgeous spot through the Tokyo Oimachi Line, where you’ll stop at the Todoroki Station. From the Shibuya station, it only takes 25 to 30 minutes train ride. From Shinjuku, it takes 35 to 50 minutes while going from Ikebukuro (Toshima) takes about 30 minutes train ride using the Fukutoshin Line. Todoroki Ravine Park is located in the Setagaya Ward of Tokyo, and it’s fairly easy to access from the major city wards.
